How did you get started in the jewellery business?

I came from a jewellery background, but my family previously sold antique jewellery, so when I started my business in 1985 I was never scared about wearing fine jewellery and was completely at home with gemstones. I had always loved coloured gemstones and I thought they were underrated, undervalued and needed to be enjoyed and worn in beautiful designs.

It was, however, other people’s confidence in me to go ahead and set up the business. There are fourteen distinctive collections, as well as men’s cufflinks and an exclusive range of luxury leather accessories, all in my signature vibrant colours.

What is your biggest inspiration when designing your pieces?

My main inspiration comes from my customers and my lifestyle, but I get most of my ideas for different colour combinations from the ballet. I have been a ballet fan all my life, the incredible colours in the costumes always makes me race back to the office with new enthusiasm for the next collection. I also find inspiration in flowers because of their colours and I find whenever I am away relaxing on the beach the ideas always start flowing!

Do you have a mentor or someone who inspired you?

I have had to carve my own path, however the clients I have do inspire me as they are always so enthusiastic.

What’s your favourite downtime activity?

Going to the ballet at the Royal Opera House and supporting Liverpool Football Club!

How would you describe the typical Kiki McDonough woman?

Busy, empowered and comfortable in their own skin.

How would you describe your work style?

I like dresses and tailored trousers with ballet pumps or kitten heels. I don’t do platforms!

What is the most rewarding aspect of what you do?

I love seeing people in all walks of life wearing my jewellery, from those walking down the street, going to a day of meetings at the office or those going out to dinner. I really enjoy watching them take pleasure in wearing it.

What has been the biggest highlight of your career so far?

Surviving bringing up children, running a home and building a business whilst managing to keep my friends!

What advice would you give to your 21 year old self?

Always enjoy your job! You spend a large proportion of your life working, so you must enjoy what you do.

And finally, what’s your fantasy alternative job?

To be a ballerina!
